Surajkund Crafts Mela 2012


Surajkund becomes more colorful, vibrant and joyful this year with the start of the 26th Surajkund Crafts Festival 2012 on February 1, 2012 with the showcase of delightful handloom and handicraft in the fair. Highly dexterous artisans from across the country as well as foreign will display their rich crafts tradition in the typical environment of a rural Indian marketplace created in the mela by Haryana tourism. In addition to that the key attraction of the mela this year are the Cultural programmes and rural cuisine.

The surajkund mela is best known to provide a great platform to the artists at national and international level to share their art directly to that common man. This year, along with the domestic artisans, artists from 11 other countries including the SAARC nations are participating in the mela and hence the 26th Surajkund Mela will mark its first international presence in 2012.

Started in 1987 as an initiative of Haryana tourism, the festival is organized every year from 1-15 February in order to promote the traditional and ethnic art of the country, many of which are on the verge of extinction. Since then, Surajkund mela has become remarkably successful year after year. Keeping in view, the success and growing popularity of the mela, Haryana tourism has invited several other countries to globalize the popularity of the mela. The 11 countries that are taking part in this mela include Thailand, Congo, Uzbekistan, Tajakistan and Kyrgystan and all the SAARC nations: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. As every year, this year's theme state is Aasam and you will feel a touch of Aasam in the mela very frequently.

The key hightlights of the 26th Surajkund Crafts Mela 2012 are:

  • Participation of Thailand as partner nation.
  • More than 500 National and state awardees craftsperson will be displaying their art a single place.
  • The artists from India and 11 other nations will be displaying and selling their best handlooms and handloom items at the same arena.
  • Scintillating cultural programmes to be held at Natyashala-open air theatre daily from 6 PM.
  • Special Amusement park with joyful rides and swings.
  • Performance by cultural troops from all the participating states and countries to show their cultural traditions from 9.30 AM to 7.30 PM.
  • Special Food Zone to enjoy delicious food items of different states and countries.

The 26th Surajkund mela has a totally different visual effect till date as an excellent rural ambience has been created by thr Haryana tourism with the use of eco-friendly items such as bamboo ladders, baskets, decorated ropes, lanterns, ballis, green plants and colorful fresh flowers.

This year the emphasis has been laid upon beautification, fine-tuning, facilities, landscape, and reduction of dust, proper illumination with a blend of theme state Aasam and India as well. In addition to that, you can find glimpses of the exquisite and skilful paintings, textiles, wood stock, ivory work, pottery, terracotta, stonework, paper work, lac work and cane and grass work in the mela this year. Thus, this year's Surajkund mela exhibits a the great creations of arts and crafts by the artisans all across the world for the arts and crafts lovers who walks here to admire and purchase these creations.
