Trip to Suraj Kund Crafts Mela 2012

With the beginning of spring season, the Delhiites and nearby localities begin to prepare for the Trip of Surajkund Craft Mela, every year where they not only can make a trip of a tourist place but also enjoy the shopping of India's and abroad finest quality of hand-made products.

This year to the tourist and the trip lovers are ready for enjoying to make a happy and joyful Trip to 26th Surajkund Craft Mela 2012, beginning from 01st February 2012.

Surajkund, literary means the reservoir of the Sun, was a lesser-known tourist place of north India until, government of India decided to organise a craft fair in 1987. Surajkund falls in the Faridabad district of Haryana, adjacent to South Delhi's Lal Kuan area.

It is situated between two villages - Lakkarpur and Baharpur - on the backdrop of Aravalli hills. It is an artificial water reservoir, built on 10th century on Tomar King, Surajpal of the Tomar Dynasty.

To recognise the historical importance of the place and to improve the business of handicraft and micro-industry sector, the central government has decided to organize a national craft fair in 1987.

The first fair, organised under the Department of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Government of India along with Haryana Tourism Corporation Limited (HTCL) at spring season in 1987, gained immense popularity that encourage the government to organise it every year from 01st February to 15th February.

The objective behind organising this fair was to boost this dying industry as factory made products were killing this industry. They were cheap and lucrative, so they were replacing the handicraft products gradually. Moreover, the brokers have occurred in the craft industry and were gulping large portion of profit itself while the skill workers and the manufacturers were getting meagre amounts.

So, targeting on multiple options, Central Government with the collaboration of Haryana Government had decided to organize this craft fair every year at spring season. Later, besides states of India, the member of SAARC countries and other Asian countries began to participate it and this fair is converting as a giant international craft fair.

Following the trend, this year too Surajkund Craft Fair is going to kick on from its scheduled time from 01st February to 15th February 2012 with 'Assam Theme'.

The 26th Surajkund Mela will be flooded with lovely handicraft works, folk paintings, metal working, stone and wood carves, tie dye crafts, embroideries, lace making, textiles printers, carpet and loom weavers, producers of silk fabrics, jewellers and sculptors - execute and display their skills.

In the 26th Surajkund Handicraft Mela, you cannot only enjoy the tour of the Surajkund and nearby tourism place but also you can also see the real culture of India and participating countries such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and African Country Congo.

Indian northeastern state Assam is the prime attraction of 26th Surajkund Fair and 'Assamese' is the theme of this year's fair.

From 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Fair Tickets:

For Physically Handicapped and Senior Citizens: Rs. 25/- per head
For others: Rs.50/- per head

Tickets are available for sale at Haryana Govt. Emporium, New Delhi; Magpie, Nahar Singh Mahal, Ballabhgarh; Gauriyya Complex, Bahadurgarh; Tilyar Complex of Haryana Tourism, and Chanderlok Building, Haryana Tourism Office, New Delhi.

How to reach Surajkund?

Surajkund lies 8 kms from South Delhi at Faridabad district. The nearest Railway Station is New Delhi, Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Faridabad Railway Station while Kashmiri Gate ISBT, Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and Faridabad ISBT are the nearest Bus Stand. By air you can de-board at Indira Gandhi International Airport, (IGI Airport), New Delhi. Metro Rail and local public and private transport facilities are available from every point of Delhi.
