The mega festival of crafts has began. Let us take a glimpse of Surajkund Crafts Mela 2012 to be held from 1 February 2012 to 15 February 2012, this year is the most awaited handlooms and handicrafts fair in the country, which is known to display the finest handlooms, handicrafts, authentic fragrances and flavors of the Indian cuisines. This year, more than 400 national and State awardees craft-persons from across India are taking part in the mela but apart from that the major attraction for this years mela will be the participation of SAARC nations along with Thailand, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka and Congo. Thus the domain of the Surajkund is increasing and going International now. Surajkund handicraft Trade Festival unites the highly skilled artisans from all over India who display the rich crafts tradition of their respective states in the same place and helps them in the direct interaction with customers.

As every year, the state of theme has been selected this year also and this year it is Aasam. Organized by the Haryana Tourism every year, a rural ambiance is created in the mela with haats as stall and kaccha roads in village to give the touch of a rural marketplace to the mela. This year, the mela is enriched with a variety of showcase that includes wooden crafts, jewellery, metal works, stone works, toys, floor coverings and many decorative items.
Some of the most delightful crafts collections in the mela include the inlay work from Punjab and rosewood carving, sandalwood from South India. 'Chikri' a wooden craft from Kashmir with some attractive works from West Bengal and North Eastern states are attracting the visitors very much. 'Sholapith' from Aasam and 'Shital West Bengal are some much talked work present in the mela. If you talk about the embroidery section, the Phulkari, the 'Banjara' and 'Bunni' embroidery from Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan, respectively are the attracting the embroidery lovers most. In addition to that, the 'Kantha' from West Bengal and Tripura, lace and crochet from Goa , the 'Suzni' from Kashmir and mirror encasing work and 'Chikan' work from Lucknow are present in the mela.
A variety of floor coverings are also available in the mela including the 'Namda' carpet of Kashmir, the woolen druggets from Mirzapur, the 'Punja Durrie' of Haryana and Punjab, and the south Indian coir and rag carpets are delighting the visitors.
Eve catching oxidized jewellery, seashell decorations and a number of stone works are also available at the mela that fascinate the jewellery and decoration lovers especially the woman. For children a variety of wooden Toys, cane ply and many other types of toys are available.
In the painting section you will not be able to resist yor appreciation to the 'Phad' paintings of Rajasthan, the 'Kalamkari' of Andhra and Karnataka, temple paintings of Odisha, 'Madhubani' of Bihar. In addition to that, excellent piece of metal work of tribal 'Dhora' work, classical South Indian metal work, glittering brass-ware, bell metal and iron are displayed to attract the visitors.
In addition to that, special food zone has been made where you can enjoy the delicious food of almost all the states. The food from Punjab and South India are among the favorite of visitors. This year's major attraction is also the Thailand food in the food court.
A list of cultural events and programs has also been organized every evening in order to increase the footfall in the mela and to entertain the visitors. The participants of different countries and sates of India to show their culture and traditions will present the cultural programs.
Amusement park for children has been arranged so that the child gets the full enjoyment of visiting the mela. Hygiene is also taken into special consideration this year by the authorities and fully automated electronic toilet has been set up to maintain the hygiene.
