Panama reports first swine flu case

Americas, Sat, 09 May 2009 IANS

Panama City, May 9 (EFE) Panama has reported its fist case of swine flu with detecting the deadly A/H1N1 virus in a young man who had recently returned from the US.

The patient is out of danger and has been sent home, Panama's Health Minister Rosario Turner said Friday, adding that both the infected man and his family have been given anti-virus treatments.

'With this new scenario we're keeping in place all the strategies we've been developing and we're also strengthening our epidemiological watchfulness, control at airports, ports and borders, and we're educating the people,' Turner said.

The minister said that this single case does not justify the suspension of classes nor will people be restricted in their movements.

Turner said that 34 suspected cases have been dismissed and another seven are awaiting the results of clinical tests carried out on them who are currently isolated in the capital's Santo Tomas Hospital.

Panama is the fourth Central American country to confirm the presence of the AH1N1 virus, together with Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala.
