Nepal PM urges CPN (UML) to support govt's decision to sack Army Chief

Kathmandu, Mon, 27 Apr 2009 ANI

Kathmandu, Apr 27 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has urged CPN (UML) chairman Jhala Nath Khanal to support the government's decision to sack Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Rookmangad Katawal.

The move came after Khanal met Dahal at his residence on Monday morning to propose an option acceptable to both the Maoists and the Nepali Congress (NC).

Defense Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa 'Badal' was also present.

On Sunday, the UML Standing Committee had decided not to support the Maoist plan to replace the Army Chief by the second-in-command, but said the party would facilitate other options, also acceptable to the NC.

Khanal is scheduled to meet NC president Girija Prasad Koirala later in the day. (ANI)
