Australian Grudge against Ganguly

New Delhi, Thu, 26 Mar 2009 M Shamsur Rabb Khan

Perhaps Australians have something very personal with ex-skipper Sourav Ganguly, or they have clash of ego while dealing with him. Three years ago, Greg Chappell, or Guru Greg made life difficult for the Bengal tiger, or left no stone unturned in humiliating him, and finally forced him out of Team India in disgrace. Now, in a bizarre move, John Buchanan has come up with an idea of four captains for the Kolkata Knight Riders team. In making such a move, Buchanan forgot that it was a single skipper –Shane Warne – who led the Rajasthan Royals and won the first IPL. This is a clear indication that Buchanan wants to get rid of Ganguly, or does not agree with what the ex-skipper does or suggests in and off the field.

So, how the idea skipper in a single will affect the overall performance? But first, the reaction of Dada, who aptly suggested thus: "Tomorrow I can jump out and say we need four batting coaches, four John Buchanans! And Shah Rukh Khan can say we need six Andy Bichels!" He is absolutely right. Can we have four Prime Ministers for a single country, or four Principals for a single college? It would be a complete mess if four persons – one by one – will assume charge and dictate their policies, styles and orders in different tunes.

Learning from last year’s experiences, all the teams are busy in renewing their game strategy. Since last year in the first IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders did not perform as per the expectation in spite of all the hype created around. Even King Khan’s cheers and applauses did not translate into victory. In rating for 2008 standings, Kolkata Knight Riders stood at 6th spot with 13 points, while Rajasthan Royals topped the it with 22 points followed by Punjab Kings XI with 20 points though Chennai Super King became the runner up.

John Buchanan, like every Australian coach, has very high estimation for himself though his majestic presence and behind-the-veil advices never paid off last year, he seems very much upset with his own performance. Which is why he, like Greg’s making Irfan bat in the upper order, has come up with an unconventional move. The result was Irfan forgot to swing the ball, and still struggling to an extent to utilize his full potential. We also must not forget his lack of talent as a cricketer, as he had been the most undistinguished Australian coach in recent times. Now this time he has to make a mark.

The hard hitting comment from the former Australian captain and cricket commentator Ian Chappell said in 2005: "If you're calling Buchanan a coach, then it's a waste of time because he can't coach cricket." Problem with Buchanan is that he is to deal with Ganguly, who has vast experience as cricketer as well as leader, with record of being the most successful skipper of Team India. Apart from clashes of ideas and opinions between Buchanan and Ganguly, there is an element of ego as to who has the better cricket mind. And with Ganguly making his own decisions, Buchanan finds it difficult to cut it with strong reasons; hence, he is trying to clip the wings of Ganguly via this hair-brained scheme.

Instead of working with ease, this idea of four skippers will badly affect the performance of the team, as shifting loyalty of players as well as internal division of the team are the two major flaws that cannot be stopped by Buchanan himself.
