CEOs opt for Obama as boss in current crisis

Americas, Tue, 10 Mar 2009 IANS

Toronto, March 10 (IANS) Whom would top Canadian executives - CEOs and presidents - opt to be their leader in the current economic crisis?

According to a survey of 100 Canadian presidents and CEOs, their top choice for leader with the most desirable leadership style to lead in the current turbulent economy is Barack Obama followed by Winston Churchill.

And what would these top executives recommend to global businesses to weather the economic downturn?

Focus on opportunity.

'Targeting new revenue opportunities' should be the top tactic by businesses to weather the current economic crisis, according to them. They said this was the most important initiative being undertaken in their own companies.

In the survey by the Bedford Group, a leading independent executive research firm, these top executives also identified 'investment in top talent as a priority' to ensure success in these troubled times.

About 38 percent CEOs said they would upgrade even 'marginal contributors' with top talent in their own organisations.

About 70 of respondents said 'engaging staff with a clear vision for the company' should be the fundamental goal when layoffs are frequent and employee morale is low.

Highlighting the significance of a strong internal team, they said companies should focus on 'employees and their core competencies' as the most important initiative during a recession.

Focusing on customer loyalty, with attention to building and strengthening consumer relationships, was their second highest priority, the top executive said.

However, spending on advertising and marketing ranked the lowest in their scheme of things during a recession.
