No IPL matches on day of counting: Lalit Modi

New Delhi, Fri, 06 Mar 2009 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 6 (ANI): Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi on Friday said that there would be no IPL matches on the day of counting of votes.

Modi said a new schedule would be released soon, adding that they were working on a schedule, which was a "cumbersome process".

"We will shortly have a new schedule out," Modi told reporters here.

Stressing that the tournament was on, he said: "We want to assure our fans that the IPL is on. There is no question of the IPL moving to a foreign country".

Various media reports had claimed that the UAE and some Western countries are ready to host the cash-rich Twenty20 event, and that Modi was threatening the government about the possibility of moving it overseas.

Modi also thanked Home Minister P. Chidambaram for receiving assurances on security.

Earlier, addressing mediapersons at a press conference, Chidambaram said he was trying his best to ensure that the second edition of IPL matches would be held smoothly.

The League, involving many international players, has been thrust into the security spotlight in the wake of Tuesday's militant attack on Sri Lankan players in Pakistan.

Foreign players are raising concerns over travelling to the subcontinent after the attack. (ANI)
