August-born kids 'significantly' less likely to get university education

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

London, July 15 (ANI): If your kid is born in towards the end of the school year, then the odds are that he or she will be more likely not to go to university.

The finding is based on a new study by Institute for Fiscal Studies, which found that 35.2 per cent of girls and 28 per cent of boys born in August are likely to get a higher education.

In contrast, 37 per cent of girls and 29.6 per cent of boys born in September are likely to go to university.

In addition to this, the researchers also found that August-born kids were also much less likely to go to top universities like Oxford or Cambridge.

The study, say researchers, is important as it shows that the differences could cause potentially damaging long-term consequences for August-born children.

"These findings underline the potentially damaging long-term education and labour market consequences faced by August-born children, simply because they were unlucky enough to be born at the end of the school year," The Independent quoted lead author Claire Crawford, as saying. (ANI)
