Europe can help achieve Mideast peace: Czech premier
Strasbourg (France), Jan 14 (DPA) European council president and Czech Premier Mirek Topolanek said Wednesday that Europe could help achieve peace in the Mideast but conceded that this might not happen soon.
Presenting his programme to the European parliament in Strasbourg for his six-month term as EU president, the Czech leader devoted some of his time to the current Gaza conflict.
He demanded a stop to all arms deliveries to the Gaza Strip and said Israel had a right to live in security without rockets being fired at it. The Palestinians had a right to establish their own state, he added.
Topolanek said Prague was working to help achieve a ceasefire and said the Europeans could succeed in helping achieve a global peace settlement in the Mideast.
'But I doubt that we will quickly succeed in that,' he admitted.
