Pietersen threatened to resign during India tour: ECB vice-chairman

Europe, Mon, 12 Jan 2009 IANS

London, Jan 12 (IANS) England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) vice-chairman Dennis Amiss revealed that Kevin Pietersen had threatened to resign during the national team's tour to India last month.

The South Africa-born Pietersen resigned last week after a public fall out with coach Peter Moores. While Pietersen was forced to resign, the ECB later sacked Moores.

Amiss told BBC Radio Five here Sunday that Pietersen had initially offered to resign as the captain after last month's drawn second Test against India in Mohali.

'He mentioned resigning the captaincy in our discussions with him but we wanted him to go away and think about it while he was in South Africa (on holiday),' Amiss was quoted as saying by the radio channel.

'We said, 'Go away and think about it and we will resolve the situation as quickly as we can'.'

The 28-year-old Pietersen told the News of the World Sunday that he was persuaded by newly appointed skipper Andrew Strauss and ex-captain Andrew Flintoff and some senior players not to resign on the India tour.

'I confided in Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison, as well as two other senior players, Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood, about my meetings with the management over the coach,' Pietersen said.

'They all - 100 per cent, I promise you categorically - said to me: 'Do not leave as England captain'.'

Since stepping down from captaincy, Pietersen had stressed his commitment to supporting Strauss for the forthcoming West Indies tour.

'I feel it is right for me to go back and just play - to do something that I love, which is scoring runs for England,' Pietersen said.

He also said that he was hurt in the way captaincy, which was his childhood dream, was taken away from him.

'I'm not angry. I'm just hurt, disappointed and upset that a childhood dream has been taken away from me.'
