Indian American body wants Indra Nooyi as commerce secretary

Americas, Sun, 11 Jan 2009 IANS

Washington, Jan 11 (IANS) An Indian-American body has suggested that Pepsico 's India-born chairperson Indra Nooyi be considered for the commerce secretary's post following the withdrawal of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson due to a federal probe.

'In this currently tough economic climate, her global vision, leadership and ideas would be exactly what President Obama would need for a position that he has called the 'leading economic diplomat for America'', the US-India Political Action Committee (USINPAC)said suggesting her name to the president-elect's transition team.

USINPAC said it is recommending to the Obama transition team that Indra Nooyi be considered for the job as Barack Obama looks for a replacement for Richardson. It also hoped that, if she is approached, Nooyi will consider the post.

The Indian-American body said it stood 'firm in the belief that she is the best candidate for the position, since her resume as a captain of industry and her work in the community speaks for itself.'

USINPAC noted that Nooyi joined PepsiCo in 1994, and was named president and CFO in 2001. In 2006, she was named the CEO of PepsiCo, becoming the fifth CEO in PepsiCo's 42-year history.

According to BusinessWeek, while she was CFO of Pepsi, the company's annual revenues rose by 72 percent, while net profit more than doubled to $5.6 billion in 2006 and Forbes magazine named her as the third most powerful woman in 2008.

'With these impeccable credentials, we earnestly believe that Indra Nooyi would be the best choice for Secretary of Commerce,' USINPAC said.
