EU lauds Bangladesh's commitment to democracy
Brussels, Jan 10 (IANS) The European Union has welcomed what it described as 'successful completion' of the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.
A statement by the current Czech EU Presidency congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her electoral victory and appointment as the prime minister of Bangladesh and paid tribute 'to the people of Bangladesh for their commitment to the holding of democratic, multi-party elections'.
Hasina led her Awami League to a landslide victory in the Dec 29 poll.
'The elections provide a basis for a new democratic development in Bangladesh. The EU is encouraged that the transfer of power has begun in a smooth and constructive manner,' the statement noted, according to EuAsiaNews.
The 27-member European bloc hoped for a stable, correct and effective functioning of the newly-elected parliament and government that can start addressing core issues for Bangladesh's future such as strengthening the democratic system, rule of law, reestablishment of a fully independent judiciary, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
