Zardari to visit Kabul Jan 7

Pakistan, Tue, 30 Dec 2008 IANS

Islamabad, Dec 30 (IANS) Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, whose first visit to Afghanistan earlier this month was cancelled due to bad weather, is now scheduled to travel to Kabul Jan 7 - but the outcome is likely to be limited, said a news report.

'Zardari's one-day trip to Afghanistan is unlikely to achieve much in context of jointly tackling terrorism and removing misgivings that have haunted relations between the two neighbouring countries,' The News said Tuesday.

Bad weather in Kabul and poor visibility led to postponement of the Dec 19 trip even though Foreign Minister Shah Mehmud Qureshi had reached the Afghan capital a day ahead of the presidential visit and held a meeting with his counterpart Rangin Dadfar Spanta.

'It was learnt that January 7 had been fixed as the tentative date for the visit,' Zardari's first to Afghanistan after becoming president, The News said Tuesday.

Zardari, however, has held a few meetings with Afghan President Hamid Karzai outside Afghanistan. One such was in Islamabad when Zardari invited Karzai to his oath-taking ceremony as president.
