Minneapolis and Seattle share top spot as most literate American cities

Washington, Sun, 28 Dec 2008 ANI

Washington, December 28 (ANI): Minneapolis and Seattle have for the first time been named the most literate American cities, with there being a tie between the two cities.

They have traded spots one and two in a list of most literate cities, based on a national survey announced in USA Today.

Following them were Washington, DC at the third spot, and St. Paul on the fourth position.

Wrapping up the top five was San Fransisco.

These cities were followed by Atlanta, Denver, Boston, and St. Louis in the same order.

The 10th spot was shared by Cincinnati and Portland.

The national survey develops a statistical profile of cities with populations of 250,000 or more. This is the sixth year of the study.

"This study attempts to capture one critical index of our nation's well-being -- the literacy of its major cities--by focusing on six key indicators of literacy: newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment, and Internet resources. The information is compared against population rates in each city to develop a per capita profile of the city's "long-term literacy"-a set of factors measuring the ways people use their literacy-and thus presents a large-scale portrait of our nation's cultural vitality," said study's author Dr. Jack Miller, president of Central Connecticut State University.

America's most literate cities in 2008 were:

Minneapolis, MN 1.5

Seattle, WA 1.5

Washington, DC 3

St. Paul, MN 4

San Francisco, CA 5

Atlanta, GA 6

Denver, CO 7

Boston, MA 8

St. Louis, MO 9

Cincinnati, OH 10.5

Portland, OR 10.5 (ANI)
