Brit Mumbai hero honored for saving hostages

London, Mon, 15 Dec 2008 ANI

London, Dec.15 (ANI): A Briton who rescued 150 hostages during the Mumbai terror attacks has been given a bravery award.

Deepak Kuntawala, 36, has been given a Spirit of Mumbai honor along with other heroes of last month's attack, reports The Sunday Mirror.

The tabloid revealed how Kuntawala led the group at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel to safety using curtains as ropes.

Deepak and his dad Vinay, 68, had spent four terrifying hours in darkness listening to gunshots before leading the breakout.

"Getting the award was humbling. I was surrounded by all these great people - firefighters, doctors, members of the armed forces - and to be put in the same category as them was a real honour," he was quoted, as saying.

Deepak, of Cheam in Surrey, has set up a fund for families of victims of the massacre, in which 172 died. (ANI)
