Dhaka, Nov 17 (IANS) Six decades after the death of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the hunt continues for memorabilia connected not only with him, but also his family members, in Naogaon district of northern Bangladesh.
The latest to be found, but in a state of neglect, are rare letters written by Rathindranath, the son of the poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Tagore junior wrote some of them to his wife. They have been found at Potisar area in Atrai upazila of Naogaon district recently along with Rabindranath Tagore's memorabilia like chairs, mirrors and cupboards.
Rathindranath wrote the letters in Bengali to the estate manager Birendranath Sarvadhikary at Potisar. Most of the letters were sent to the estate through the postal department from Uttarayan Rajpur of Shantiniketan, now in West Bengal, India, in 1954.
A rare letter of Protima Devi, wife of Rathindranath, was sent to the same employee of the estate with a request to send Taka 2,000 (about $80) for the marriage ceremony of one Azin's son as loan.
Local Potisar school teacher Tapon Kumar told The Daily Star newspaper that the 11 letters of Rathindranath and his wife had not been preserved. As a result some of the letters were now moth-eaten.
Rabindranath enthusiast Matiur Rahman collected some memorabilia like a teapot, two mirrors and a cupboard along with other artefacts with the help of local people and government officials recently. Earlier too, he collected several pieces of Rabindranath memorabilia.
Rabindranath Tagore visited Potisar for the last time in 1937 by boat. His son Rathindranath died in 1961. Protima Devi passed away in 1969.
