Mumbai, Dec 15(ANI): The Indian Government has released a former British naval officer, who was charged with sexually abusing street urchins in Mumbai.

Hamstead- based Duncan Grant, 68, was freed from an Indian jail after serving a four-year sentence, The Sun reports.

He and Hampshire-based retired Lieutenant Commander Allan Waters were convicted of abusing five homeless boys at the "children's shelter" established by Grant in Mumbai in 2006.

Grant and Waters were also found guilty of handing over orphans to foreign sex tourists.

Though both were acquitted due to lack of evidence in 2008, the Indian Supreme Court had later overturned the ruling saying: The street children having no roof over their heads became the prey of paedophiles."

Waters is also expected to be released shortly. We work closely to monitor offenders to reduce the risk of offending," a Scotland Yard spokesperson said. (ANI)
