Myanmar gives legal status to Suu Kyi's party

Yangon, Tue, 13 Dec 2011 ANI

Yangon, Dec 13(ANI): Burmese authorities have permitted pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi's party to rejoin mainstream politics.

The move would enable Suu Kyi to run for the country's Parliament, The Herald Sun reports.

An announcement published in the official daily 'New Light of Burma' said the country's election commission had approved the NLD's application to re-register as a political party.

The move follows a series of reforms undertaken by the country's nominally civilian government to liberalize previous regime's hard-line policies, since it assumed power from a military junta in March.

Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) was declared as political party by the military junta in 2010 after it chose to boycott a rare election alleging that the rules were unfair.

Myanmar had earlier approved a new law for the first time, which allows citizens to request permission for staging peaceful protests. (ANI)
