Cricket Australia's board of directors likely to be dissolved following governance review

Melbourne, Tue, 06 Dec 2011 ANI

Melbourne, Dec 6(ANI): Cricket Australia's (CA) board of directors may be dissolved following a review, which is expected to recommend drastic changes in the governance of the sport.

The review will likely recommend establishing an independent commission to replace the 14- member board.

Former football coach David Crawford and Australian Football League Commissioner Colin Carter will present their review at a two-day CA board meeting in Melbourne.

Newly appointed CA Chairperson Wally Edwards said the current model was not working efficiently due to conflicting interests.

"We have too many people on the board. I don't think Cricket Australia needs 14 directors. To be on the board, you have to be on a state board. Therefore, where do your allegiances lie? Conflicts of interest, all that stuff," The Age quoted Edwards, as saying.

Edwards said he was prepared to implement a new model, if suggested by the review.

Australian Cricketers Association President Greg Dyer described the Crawford/Carter review as more important than Argus Report, which recommended changes in the game earlier this year.

"On the scale of importance, the Argus Report was a two out of 10, this is nine because it goes to the very foundation of the way the game is run. We need to have a governance model which is best practice," Dyer said.

"We should get a fully independent and qualified board that has the full skill set that is required to run the modern business of cricket. The historic model when people are appointed by state to look after their state's interests is the wrong model," he added.

Dyer suggested having maximum of nine board members, who are elected on their skills and abilities rather than their allegiance to a state. (ANI)
