London, Nov 26 (ANI): The UK government has planned to set up a special cyber crime unit that would deal with the growing number of online attacks.
An elite unit of police computer experts dubbed the 'iPlods' would track down and prosecute online criminals, terrorists and hackers as part of the government's 650million pounds initiative.
The Cyber Security Strategy launched by UK ministers revealed that Britain is developing its 'military capability' in cyberspace to combat a growing threat, the Daily Mail reports.
This includes being able to launch pre-emptive or revenge attacks against hostile foreign powers, by developing programmes that could disable their military capabilities.
According to the report, a government document acknowledges that the new unit 'will develop and use a range of new techniques, including proactive measures to disrupt threats to our information security' and 'develop tactics, techniques and plans to deliver military effects through operations in cyberspace'.
The government also urged computer experts to help out by volunteering as cyber special constables.
A military team based at GCHQ in Cheltenham would also fight cyber crime as part of the initiative, but officials said that this would not 'compromise the intelligence agency's core security and intelligence mission'. (ANI)
