IAEA calls for nuclear weapons free Middle East

Europe, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 IANS

Vienna, Oct 5 (Xinhua) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for the establishment of a nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East.

During voting Saturday on a resolution adopted at the IAEA general conference here, 82 member states voted in favour of the resolution, with the US and Israel abstaining.

It is widely believed that Israel is now the only country in the Middle East which has nuclear weapons, though Tel Aviv has not admitted it.

In addition, Iran's nuclear issue has attracted increasing attention of the international community recently.

Israel and the US, along with some European countries, have accused Tehran of developing nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian programme which the Islamic country has denied.

Iran has been under three sets of diplomatic sanctions by the UN after it refused to stop its uranium enrichment activities.
