Canberra, Nov 21 (ANI): Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's proposal to overturn a ban imposed on uranium sales to India has been rejected by a majority of voters in Queensland.
A Galaxy poll covering 800 voters, revealed that only a third of the state's Labor voters back Gillard's controversial plan, the Courier Mail reports.
The poll showed that about 56 percent of the state's voters are opposed to selling uranium to India, which is yet to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NNPT).
Opposition to the plans is even higher among Labor supporters, as 61 percent rejected the move.
According to the report, the plans have pitted Gillard against Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, who has refused to lift a ban on mining the state's considerable uranium reserves.
The findings come as Labor braces for a bruising battle over various controversial policies at the party's national conference to be held next week.
A meeting of left-wing Labor MPs in Canberra vowed to use the conference to fight against Gillard's plans to sell uranium to India because it has not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. (ANI)
