China reacts cautiously to Myanmar's political reforms

Beijing , Sat, 19 Nov 2011 ANI

Beijing, Nov 19(ANI): China has reacted cautiously to the ongoing political reforms being carried across Myanmar amid prevailing tensions between the two sides over massive Chinese investment.

"We would like to see China and other Western countries enhance contact with Myanmar and improve their relations. At the same time, we also hope the domestic and foreign policies of Myanmar are conducive to peace and stability in Myanmar," The Wall Street Journal quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin, as saying.

The statement came after the announcement of a planned visit by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Myanmar next month, which symbolizes a move to increase US influence in the poor yet strategically important nation.

A senior Obama administration official said China had been consulted about the recent U.S. deal with Myanmar.

"Engagement with Burmese leaders by the United States does not come at the expense of China or China's relationship with Burma," the official said, adding that the US administration believes that Myanmar's leaders "recognize that the cockpit of global prosperity is in the Asian-Pacific region, and they're not playing."

An earlier Obama's speech vowing to increase US military- build up in the Asia- Pacific region has increased Chinese concerns.

Beijing is currently embroiled in territorial disputes with its US allies, including the Philippines and Taiwan, over island groupings in the South China Sea.

According to analysts, China is struggling to augment ties among its neighbours partly due to contradictions in the country's foreign policy.

Even though Beijing promotes a "peaceful rise" narrative, its aggressive moves to secure territory and resources has led to trust deficit among smaller neighbors.linton "truly got fed up with China's actions in the region," Peking University's International Relations Professor Zhu Feng said.
