UAE refinery awards contract for major expansion

Gulf-Middle East, Mon, 06 Oct 2008 IANS

Dubai, Oct 1 (IANS) UOP, a part of the American conglomerate Honeywell, will supply technology and engineering services for the expansion of the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Ruwais refinery.

The Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Co, also known as Takreer, has awarded a contract to this effect to UOP, according to a UOP statement.

'This facility will help us to meet the growing demand for clean fuels and chemicals in the Middle East and around the world,' Takreer general manager Jasem Al Sayegh said in the statement.

'UOP's hydroprocessing solutions are an integral part of this effort,' he added.

Once completed, the new refining unit in Ruwais will produce propylene, unleaded gasoline, naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, gas-oil, bunker fuel and other hydrocarbon derivatives.

A wide range of UOP technologies will help Ruwais to produce clean, low sulphur distillate and gasoline.

According to UOP, its technologies will help upgrade heavy feedstocks to produce ultra-low-sulphur diesel, remove sulphur from saturated LPG streams and manage benzene content in the gasoline pool.

The new unit will also include a hydrotreating unit to produce low-sulphur kerosene.

UOP's senior vice-president for process technology and equipment Peter Piotrowski said that the company has built a portfolio and knowledge base that are designed to meet the different needs of its customers.

'We are pleased to be working with Takreer again to help them maximise return on their assets,' he said.

The new unit is expected to be complete by 2014.

Located 240 km from Abu Dhabi, the Ruwais refinery currently produces 120,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and 280,000 bpd of condensate.

Takreer also operates the 85,000 bpd Abu Dhabi refinery on the outskirts of the UAE's capital city.

The UAE is the fifth largest exporter of oil in the world.

In 2007, the country's oil output stood 2.5 million bpd.
