Former India speedster Javagal Srinath, who is presently playing the role of ICC Match referee to perfection, urged the need of an indigenous sports medicine centre to tackle the increasing injury problems of the country's players.
Srinath shared his views while laying the foundation stone for a modern sports complex being constructed by the Manipal University at Kaprigudda here on Wednesday. Srinath also appealed to the Manipal group to start a full-scale academic discipline in sports medicine.
There should be a Sports Medicine Complex on the lines of the one in South Africa. Srinath referred his own 1996 incident where he had to go to South Africa for his leg ligament treatment while master blaster Sachin Tendulkar had to go to England for his back injury.
Speaking on the occasion, Srinath said, "Sports Medicine Centre is the need of the hour and therefore Universities should come forward to start courses on sports medicine."
To get into sports and to further pursue it career-wise in India cannot be done since the stakes involved were too high that too with a highly competitive and thriving sport like cricket.
Srinath feels that a Sports medicine centre will also emerge as a key business venture in the coming years and private university like Manipal could play a huge role towards this direction.
The Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University, H.S. Ballal, said that the steps have already been initiated to start a full-grown PG course in alliance with a foreign university in sports medicine on its Manipal campus. The University is currently negotiating with Australia’s New South Wales University.
