Mankachar (Assam), Sep 22 (ANI): A delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) visited the border areas in Assam which have been ceded away to Bangladesh through a recent bilateral agreement during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent visit to Dhaka.

BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy led the delegation to the border areas of Mankachar in Assam's Dhubri District.

While interacting with the local people, Rudy said that the opposition was not consulted on the vital issue.

"We have seen both the aspirations and the facts. The leaders of opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were not consulted prior to the departure of the Prime Minister to Bangladesh for signing the agreements, both on Teesta water accord and the border disputes," he added

"And here right on the border at Borabori next to Meghalaya, we are finding that there are many areas where Indian citizens have papers and documents which have been ceded to Bangladesh. It is a matter of national importance and national integrity and the sovereignty of the state as well because the Prime Minister has chosen to part with the land which is the property of the Indian citizens here," he said.

"We are concerned at the prevailing situation. We have visited the border and this is the border post. We protest and we shall duly go back to parliament and protest against the border agreement signed by Bangladesh with the Prime Minister of India," he added.

Earlier, BJP leader Arun Jaitley has demanded that proper attention should be given by government to the lives of those who might be affected by the land deal with Dhaka.

He said that the central government should adopt a no-compromise policy.

"I think that there should be no compromise with the Indian land. Before the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Bangladesh, Sushma Swaraj had also said that same. We hope that the government keeps the integrity of the Indian land and those associated with it. There should be no compromise at all," he added.

Recently, during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Dhaka, a deal was inked under which New Delhi had agreed to transfer 600 acres of India's northeastern state Assam's land to bordering Bangladesh to settle the long pending boundary dispute with Bangladesh.

The agreement had affirmed that the India would hand over 600 acres of land, presently in Dhubri and Hailakandi regions of India's northeastern state of Assam to Bangladesh. (ANI)
