Tripoli,Sept 13(ANI): Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has warned that Libya faces the threat of being taken over by Islamic extremists if stable government is not established soon.
Rasmussen said Islamic extremists would "try to exploit" any weakness in the new regime, which marks an end to four decades of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's rule.
"We cannot exclude the possibility that extremists will try to exploit a situation and take advantage of a power vacuum," Rasmussen said.
His warning came in the wake of evidence of split in the rebel leadership in Tripoli over a variety of issues including the futuristic role of the Islamist militias, which played a significant role in the Libyan revolution.
The National Transitional Council head Mustafa Abdul Jalil has announced that a new regime in Libya would abide by Islamic shariah law as the "main source" of legislation. We are a Muslim people, for a moderate Islam, and we will stay on this road," he said.
His decision suggested that Libya would follow neighbours such as Egypt in allowing secular freedom to its citizens. ut the rebel leadership still faces threats from Colonel Gaddafi's regime, the Telegraph reports.
Rasmussen admitted things could "move very fast" if Gaddafi was toppled.
"I think that he still inspires resistance in some pockets of Gaddafi loyalists. I do believe we are in the very final phase of our operation. But there's still a threat to the civilian population and as long as that exists we will continue our operation," he warned.
Gaddafi also issued a new message through a Syrian-based television station last night, vowing to continue with resistance.e still controls a part of south Libya, and his forces recently raided an oil refinery complex behind rebel lines, which killed 15 people. (ANI)
