New York, Aug 30(ANI): Petra Kvitova became the first reigning Wimbledon champion to lose in the first round of the US Open when she went down in straight sets to Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru.
The fifth-seeded Kvitova committed a staggering 52 unforced errors in losing to Dulgheru 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Dulgheru converted five of nine break points in dispatching Kvitova, who beat Maria Sharapova in the Wimbledon final.
The third-seeded Sharapova withstood a stern test from British teenager Heather Watson before advancing with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, victory.
Sharapova, who won the US Open in 2006, needed two hours and 14 minutes to outlast Watson.
Meanwhile, unseeded in New York for the first time in 14 years, two-time US Open champion Venus Williams also made a confident start.
She defeated World No. 91-ranked Vesna Dolonts 6-4, 6-3. (ANI)
