Crowds heckle London mayor for failing to control UK riots

London, Wed, 10 Aug 2011 ANI

London, Aug.10 (ANI): British citizens have savaged London mayor Boris Johnson for failing to protect the public during the rioting that has been going on for the past five days.

A businesswoman, Onelia Giarratano, whose hair salon in Clapham Junction, was smashed up by young thugs, compared the orgy of violence to 'a war movie'.

She confronted Johnson after he returned from a vacation to Canada, even as Prime Minister David Cameron led a fight back to restore his government's credentials as being tough on crime.

Giarratano complained to Johnson that: "We were in complete shock. They were mocking us from outside. We were left completely terrified."

The Daily Mail further quoted her, as saying: "We could hear them smashing everything. The noise was atrocious, you could hear them cheering each other, screaming. They were young, very young, 12 to 15 years old. I was shaking for two hours afterwards. It's outrageous. This is a war zone. It's like a scene from a war movie."

Johnson and British Homse Secretary Theresa May faced a barrage of criticism from angry residents wanting to know why their area had not been protected.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was heckled in Birmingham, where a number of passers-by shouted 'go home' while he was visiting affected areas.

Johnson said: "I want to say to everybody who runs a shop or owns a business here how very sorry I am for the loss and the damage you have suffered. I also want to say to the people who have been involved in instigating these riots and those who have been robbing and stealing that they will be caught, they will be apprehended and they will face punishments they will bitterly regret. They will."

He added: "I know there are questions about the police response and police numbers. We are certainly going to be dealing with those."

British Police have warned that they could use plastic bullets to quell the riots.

Prime Minister Cameron has ordered 16,000 officers to regain control of the capital.

Labour leader Ed Miliband has also been visiting riot-hit areas of London. (ANI)
