Royal endorsement for Shinawatra as Thailand PM on Monday

Bangkok , Sun, 07 Aug 2011 ANI

Bangkok, Aug 7 (ANI): The royal endorsement of Yingluck Shinawatra as Thailand Prime Minister will take place on Monday.

Thailand's House of Representatives Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont said that the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary has informed him that he should attend the audience with the King Bhumibol Adulyadej at 5.30 p.m. on August 8.

Kiatsuranont said that the House of Representatives' Secretary-General would deliver the royal command to the Pheu Thai head office where Shinawatra will formally accept the premiership after attending the audience with His Majesty, Xinhua reports.

Thailand's parliament had elected Shinawatra as the country's first female Prime Minister on Friday, a month after her party won a landslide victory in the July 3 elections.

Almost 60 percent or 296 of all 500 lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted in Shinawatra's favor. Another 197 members abstained.

The 44-year-old, who started her political career in June, is the sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was overthrown in a bloodless 2006 coup and is now living in self-imposed exile.

Pheu Thai Party led by Shinawatra had won 265 seats in the general election on July 3. (ANI)
