Beijing, July 22 (ANI): The World's biggest technology companies, including Apple, HP and Dell are responsible for creating 'electronic sweatshops' and encouraging exploitation of workers in China, a report has said.
The report released by New York based China Labour Watch has said technology companies are responsible for the string of suicides among workers in China.
China Labour Watch sent its investigators to work on the production lines of 10 Chinese electronics factories that assemble products for Apple, Dell, HP, Sony, Nokia, Motorola and many others, The Telegraph reports.
After over eight months of investigations, the report claims that the conditions of the workers were not only unethical but also illegal under Chinese law.
Nine of the 10 factories allegedly forced staff to work 40 extra hours of overtime each week and nine paid a basic wage that 'did not provide workers with the means to afford basic living costs'.
to the report, a company had rules that workers were not even allowed to speak during their 12-hour shifts.
The report also claims that on one HP assembly line, workers were required to complete their assigned task every three seconds and remain standing for 10 hours.
The report noted that the industry was unregulated and that Apple paid only 3.99 pounds to manufacture a 600 pound iphone, leaving factories little option but to make profits by exploiting workers. (ANI)
