Canberra, July 3 (ANI): Aboriginal elders in Australia have put a curse on the iconic vacation destination Rottnest Island, warning it will suffer "endless misfortune."
They claim it has been plagued by accidents and controversy since the curse was invoked last year, the Courier Mail reports.
Nyoongar elder Noel Nannup, who runs Indigenous Tours WA, revealed the curse's existence in a bid to ensure people understood the ramifications of the Rottnest Island Authority's (RIA) decision to cancel his indigenous bus tour of the island.
He said the island was "spiritually doomed" because the bus tour was a key plank of the island's reconciliation plan.
According to the report, elders imposed the curse last year in a secret ceremony in response to what they see as failure to recognize the deep importance Rottnest has to the Aboriginal people.
Indigenous Tours WA is suing the RIA for breach of contract, claiming the failure of its Wadjemup Bus Tour resulted directly from the authority's failure to protect the tour from racial discrimination.
Nannup said the tour was launched as part of the Rottnest Reconciliation Action Plan, and was aimed at cleansing Rottnest of the stigma it carried as a result of the horrors suffered there by Aboriginal prisoners. (ANI)
