US building 'scale model' of Internet to practice cyber war games

Washington , Sat, 18 Jun 2011 ANI

Washington, June 18 (ANI): The United States is reportedly building its own "scale model" of the internet to carry out cyber war games.

The scale model would allow researchers to simulate cyber attacks from hackers based inside the US and by foreign powers, the BBC reports.

Over 500million dollars has been allocated by the Department of Defense to develop "cyber technologies".

According to the report, the project is currently being overseen by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (Darpa).

When ready, it would function as a test-bed for defensive and possibly offensive technologies such as network protection systems.

"Having a controllable mini-internet would allow researchers to carry-out experiments in days rather than the weeks it currently takes," Darpa spokesman Eric Mazzacone said.

Unlike the real Internet, the system will also be able to be wiped or reset after each test, Mazzacone added.

Development of the National Cyber Range is currently in the hands of several organizations, including Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Lockheed Martin. (ANI)
