Nepal keen to build partnership with international community, says Prachanda

New York, Sept 27 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister Prachanda stated at the UN General Assembly that Nepal government would build partnership with the international community to create an atmosphere for a new socio-economic transformation in Nepal.

Addressing the 63rd General Assembly on Friday, Prachanda said that Nepal is committed to restore peace and order, and unleash socio-economic transformation. He said the formal end of the monarchy was a new opportunity to transform 'old feudalistic' state into a new federate Nepal.

"After the historic political transformation, our agenda now is to bring about equally historic socio-economic transformation of the country," he added.

Prachanda said that the peace process is based on multiparty democracy, inclusiveness, accommodation, dialogue, and the recognition of the people as the ultimate arbiter. It is the outcome of our own creative disposition towards peace and we feel that it can also serve as a reference model for peace elsewhere.

"The country moves ahead towards peace, new problems in the form of global food crisis, rising oil prices and imminent dangers from climate change are to be curbed. These challenges also undermine our achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)," he added.

He appealed to the international community to extend all necessary support and cooperation to protect and promote its pristine environment. He also said that Nepal was ready to invite and encourage investment in its hydro-power projects.

He also claimed that the environment for the protection and promotion of human rights in Nepal had significantly improved, especially after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord in November 2006.

Earlier, addressing a roundtable on poverty and hunger at the UN General Assembly high-level event on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on Thursday, Prachanda urged the international community and world leaders to work seriously to achieve the development goals, Kantipur reported. (ANI)
