Chigumbura resigns as Zimbabwe captain

Harare , Sun, 01 May 2011 ANI

Harare, May 1(ANI): Elton Chigumbura has resigned as Zimbabwe cricket captain to focus on improving his own form.

Chigumbura was appointed captain in May 2010, but his performances have suffered under the pressure of the captaincy.

"I have thought long and hard about the job since my return from the World Cup and I have consulted my family and friends about it," Stuff.co.nz quoted Chigumbura, as saying.

"While some still think I should have stayed on, others agreed with me that I needed to concentrate on my own game and let somebody else lead the team," he added.

Hamilton Masakadza or Brendan Taylor are tipped to replace the 25-year-old.

Chigumbura's highest score during the recent World Cup on the Indian subcontinent was an unbeaten 38 against Kenya.

He made 32 runs in the rain-affected match against Pakistan, but his run rate was woeful against Australia (14), Sri Lanka (six), and Canada (five) - making for an average 20 runs. (ANI)
