New Delhi, Wed, 23 Jan 2008 NI Wire

Indian mixed doubles pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza had a mixed day out as first they scored a hard fought victory over second seeded Simon Aspelin and Lisa Raymond and later they eased into the semifinals, following their seventh seeded opponents Martin Damm and Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic gave them walkover, in the mixed doubles event at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The unseeded Indian pair got the better of Simon Aspelin (Swe) and Lisa Raymond (US), seeded second in the event, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 before getting a walkover given by seventh seeded Czechs Martin Damm and Kveta Peschke.

The second seeded Swede-American pair gave stiff resistance to Indian duo and tested their skills to the fullest. The final set was nerve-wracking as it went like pendulum. It was the Indian pair who held their nerve till last to clinch the decider in a grueling 17 games battle.

In the men’s doubles, sixth-seeded Bhupathi and Mark Knowles of Bahamas will fight it out with the top-seed pair of Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Yuki Bhambri advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the boys’ singles where he will take on Japanese Tadayuki Loughi while Karunuday Singh’s campaign came to an end.

Bhambri rallied to beat Slovakia’s Zalan Klempa 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, in his second round match, while Karunuday went down 6-7 (4-7), 4-6 after putting up a great fight against Tsung-Hua-Yang of Chinese Taipei.
