Ecuador ready to declare US envoy persona non grata over Wikileaks police corruption statement

Washington , Wed, 06 Apr 2011 ANI

Washington, Apr 6 (ANI): Ecuador reportedly wants Heather Hodges the U.S. ambassador to the country, to leave after the whistle blowing website Wikileaks released a cable quoting her as saying that police corruption was very high.

Ecuador Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said he had not received a satisfactory explanation.

"Ecuador's government has decided to consider this woman as a persona non grata, we have asked her to leave the country in the shortest time possible," Fox News quoted Patino, as saying.

Patino also said the decision did not mean Ecuador was breaking off relations with the US.

The latest flap came a month after the U.S. ambassador in Mexico resigned over a WikiLeaks cable revealing criticism about the way Mexico handles drug cartels. (ANI)
