We will renegotiate n-deal if we come to power: BJP

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS) Criticising the Manmohan Singh government, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday said it would renegotiate the India-US nuclear deal if it came to power.

"There are certain clauses in the 123 Agreement which we do not agree upon. If we come to power, we would renegotiate on those points," BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters here.

"The deal has been done at the cost of the country's sovereignty and nuclear independence. We don't accept it in its current form," he added.

Rudy said that by signing the nuclear deal, 'we would become part of Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) regime, even when India never formally signed it'.

He said India cannot give up on its sovereign right to conduct a nuclear test, especially because of "India's geography, unstable territory and home-grown turmoil".

Asked if the BJP would conduct a nuclear test if it came to power, Rudy replied: "If there's a need, if scientists ask for it..."

The US Senate late Wednesday gave a resounding 86-13 approval to the historic accord visualised by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President George W. Bush over three years ago, removing the last legislative hurdle in its path.
