SA detective who led Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani's murder case charged with fraud, racis

Cape Town, Mar 26 (ANI): A senior South African detective who had led an investigation into the Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani's murder case in Cape Town last year, appeared in a court charged with racism and fraud for calling a black security guard a 'black baboon'.

Colonel Christiaan Theron, who works for South Africa's elite Hawks investigations unit, however denied charges against him in the court yesterday, the Daily Mail reports.

Colonel Theron also faces an allegation of fraud over claims that he had tried to bribe his alleged victim with a car if he agreed to drop the charges.

Thirty-six-year-old court security guard Bulelani Mgcuwe has claimed that the first incident happened in March last year, when Theron had allegedly racially insulted him after he asked the detective to move his car from a reserved bay outside the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court in Cape Town, near South Africa's Western Cape province.

According to a South African media report and evidence contained in court papers, Theron allegedly said: "F*** you, stupid security guard," to which Mgcuwe allegedly retorted: "F*** you, stupid policeman."

The paper quoted Mgcuwe as saying in court papers that: "I was very disturbed by these racist remarks. My heart was pounding and my whole body was shivering."

The security guard also alleged that Theron later promised to give him a car if he withdrew the case.

"Theron then asked me if I had a car, upon which I replied: 'No.' He asked me to withdraw the case against him then he will buy me a car," he added.

However, the officer's lawyer Francois du Toit said that his client has vehemently denied the allegations.

"We welcome this opportunity to see these ridiculous claims dismissed. My client did not, and would not, engage in such behaviour and he absolutely denies the charges," Toit addded. (ANI)
