UN pat for India's role in peacekeeping missions

New York, Oct 2 (IANS) The UN secretary general has appreciated India's consistent and long-standing support for the world body's peacekeeping operations. India is one of the leading troop-contributors to UN's peace keeping missions.

 

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his appreciation for India during his meeting here Wednesday with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

 

 

The two discussed global issues within the UN system. On dealing with the challenge of climate change, Mukherjee underlined the importance of the central principle of common but differentiated responsibilities for developed and developing countries.

 

 

Mukherjee also met President of the 63rd UN General Assembly (UNGA), Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann of Nicaragua. Brockmann spoke of his long-standing admiration of Mahatma Gandhi and the Gandhian way of non-violence.

 

 

In his meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Rohitha Bogollogama, Mukherjee expressed concern over recent incidents involving Indian fishermen in the maritime boundary area.

 

 

The two ministers agreed to evolve a mechanism to resolve such issues.

 

 

During discussions with the foreign minister of Nepal, Upendra Yadav, Mukherjee touched upon the issue of floods caused as a result of the damage sustained in the Kosi barrage.

 

 

Mukherjee reiterated India's willingness to assist Nepal on any matter that the government and people of the Himalayan republic desired.

 

 

The Indian external affairs minister is on a five-day visit to the US in connection with the 63rd annual session of the UNGA and the International Day of Non-violence being observed Oct 2. He has held bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of several other countries including Russia.
