Agartala, Oct 1 (IANS) The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led Left Front in Tripura secured a landslide victory in local body by-elections, results of which were announced Wednesday.
The Left Front won 123 of the 135 seats in the Agartala municipal council polls, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), zilla parishads, panchayat samitis, gram panchayats and village councils elections.
By-elections were scheduled to be held for 167 seats in these local bodies, but Left candidates were unopposed in 32 seats.
The main opposition Congress bagged five gram panchayat and four village council seats, while its poll partner Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) won only one seat in the village council. The Janata Dal (United) managed to win two gram panchayat seats.
The opposition parties failed to secure any seat in the Agartala municipal council, TTAADC, zilla parishads and panchayat samitis. The by-polls were necessitated following the death of a few members and resignations after some of them got elected to the state assembly in the Feb 23 elections.
An estimated 82.46 percent of the 176,055 electorate exercised their franchise in Saturday's elections where 310 candidates were in the fray.
