Washington, Feb 18(ANI): The United States has issued a 'travel alert' for its citizens travelling to or living in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in the wake of the ICC World Cup 2011 being hosted by the trio, saying that the mega event "can be targets for terrorist attacks".
"While the US government has no specific threat information regarding the Cricket World Cup, large, high-profile events of this nature can be targets for terrorist attacks," the US Department of State said in a notification.
"US citizens should monitor local news reports and consider the level of security present when visiting public places, including religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment, and recreation and sporting venues," it added.
The World Cup will be held in these three countries between February 19 and April 2, 2011, while this US 'travel alert' expires on April 9.
The notification urged the US travellers planning to visit any of the three World Cup host nations to pay particular attention at this time to the information on safety and security, crime, scams, traffic safety, and road conditions.
"US citizens should maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security," it added.
The notification also stated that local authorities in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka were responsible for security arrangements for the World Cup matches. (ANI)
