Omar says situation in J-K not conducive for polls:

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

New Delhi, Oct 1 (ANI): National Conference (NC) president Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that situation in Jammu and Kashmir is not conducive for holding assembly elections.

"The situation is not conducive for polls," a news agency quoted Abdullah as saying and added that there was a deep polarisation of voters in Jammu and the feeling of alienation was very strong in the valley.

The NC has already conveyed to the Election Commission that for holding polls the ground situation must be conducive and the atmosphere must be peaceful to ensure all sections of people take part in the polls.

"Unless there is optimum turnout of voters, holding of election will not serve any purpose. If polls are held now, there will be very low participation," he said.

However, Abdullah said they have left the issue of fixing the poll schedule to the EC, as the constitutional body was the appropriate authority to take a decision in this regard.

On Monday, the National Conference had said it was the only party, which could bridge the divide between Jammu and Kashmir regions created during the two-month-long turmoil over the Amarnath land row. (ANI)
