Thai military reinstates abrogated laws

Thailand,Politics, Mon, 09 Jun 2014 IANS

Bangkok, June 9 (IANS) Thai military Monday reinstated the Election Act, the Political Parties Act and the Public Referendum Act, all laws under the abrogated 2007 constitution.

The three acts are to remain in effect until further notice, said an announcement issued by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), Xinhua reported Monday.

Despite the revival of the Election Act, the election of members of the House of Representatives, as well as the selection and election of senators, will be suspended pending further notice, according to the announcement.

Meanwhile, although the Political Parties Act remains in force, existing political parties are banned from gatherings or any political activities for the time being.

The establishment or registration of new political parties is also suspended, the announcement said.

The NCPO officially abrogated the constitution soon after the May 22 coup, with only section 2, which states, "Thailand adopts a democratic regime of government with the King as Head of State," being kept intact.

Courts, the Election Commission (EC) and other independent agencies have been left untouched.
