UAE leader attends nuclear security summit

The Hague, March 25 (IANS/WAM) Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Armed Forces, Tuesday attended the sessions of the ongoing Nuclear Security Summit here.

Sheikh Mohamed, who is leading the UAE delegation to the summit, met a number of world leaders and representatives of participating delegations and discussed with them the importance of activating cooperation and boosting joint efforts to ward off nuclear dangers and threats and to fight nuclear terrorism.

Sheikh Mohamed is accompanied to the nuclear summit by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE foreign minister, Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority, Yousef Al Otaiba, ambassador of the the UAE to the US, Mohammed Mubarak Al Mazrouie, undersecretary of the court of Abu Dhabi crown prince, and Hamad Al Kaabi, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Leaders and representatives of more than 50 countries, including the US, China and France, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and representatives of regional and international organisations, are taking part in the summit, which is aimed at preventing nuclear terrorism around the globe.

The third edition of the summit discussed ways of implementing a series of pre-emptive measures to prevent internal and/or external threats directly or indirectly related to nuclear materials, radioactive sources, relevant facilities or other associated activities. The summit aims to encourage more states to ratify the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.
