Hamid Karzai's brother to drop out of Afghanistan's presidential bid

Washington, Thu, 06 Mar 2014 ANI

Washington, Mar. 6 (ANI): Afghan President Hamid Karzai's older brother Qayum Karzai has dropped out of the race for next month's presidential elections.

An aide to Qayum Karzai, Aminullah Habibi, said Karzai would most likely support Zalmay Rassoul, the former foreign minister, for the presidential bid.

According to the New York Times, Habibi said that negotiations were still taking place but it will be final tomorrow.

Despite the vocal support of other family members, Qayum Karzai's entry to the race was said to have defied the president's wishes from the start.

In an interview with The Washington Post recently, Karzai openly acknowledged he was stepping in to prevent his brother from running. (ANI)
