Elections will proceed as planned: Thailand PM

Thailand,Politics, Wed, 15 Jan 2014 IANS

Bangkok, Jan 15 (IANS) Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Wednesday the country's Feb 2 general elections will proceed as planned.

The government and the Election Commission are not empowered to postpone the elections, the prime minister said, Xinhua reported.

Yingluck Shinawatra attended a government-held meeting in the morning with around 70 representatives from various sides to discuss whether to defer the elections.

According to her, the majority of those present at the meeting agreed the elections should go ahead.

The Democrat Party and the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee did not send any representative to the discussion.

The prime minister Tuesday insisted that she would not resign from her post as demanded by anti-government protestors.

Shinawatra said she would continue to perform her duties as the prime minister because she was obliged to protect democracy that belonged to the Thai people.

Earlier, the anti-government protestors threatened to seize the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (Aerothai) if Yingluck Shinawatra did not resign by Wednesday.
