Emergency in Egypt to end mid-November

Egypt,Defence/Security, Tue, 22 Oct 2013 IANS

Cairo, Oct 22 (IANS/AKI) Egypt's interim government said Tuesday it will end mid-November the state of emergency imposed amid unrest in the country after a deadly crackdown by security forces in August.

The Masrawy website cited the military-backed interim government spokesman Sherief Shawki as making the announcement.

The statement followed reports by some media outlets that the government intended to extend the state of emergency after the attack on a Coptic church in the Cairo suburb of Al Warraq Sunday that killed at least three people.

Egypt has in the past two months seen its worst spate of attacks on churches and minority Christian properties in years.

The attacks began after security forces Aug 14 cleared two Islamist protest camps in Cairo set up to demand the reinstatement of elected Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, and killed hundreds of his supporters.
