Islamabad, June 13 (ANI): The Hindu community has finally got some representation in the Punjab assembly in Pakistan.
The development comes after Kanji Ram, a Hindu, was elected on the reserved seats for minorities from the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday.
According to the Daily Times, he is the second Hindu to reach the provincial assembly after Seth Bharta Ram who was elected in 1997.
The PML-N had given eight names for the eight reserved seats allocated in the Punjab assembly for minorities, and due to its huge mandate in the House, it has won seven seats out of the eight, the report said.
Ram said he belongs to Tehsil Sadiqabad in district Rahim Yar Khan where there were a considerable number of Hindus living and he would try to resolve all their issues.
Talking about Indo-Pak relations, he said his community was in favour of good-relations with all neighbouring countries, especially India as it was an important country in the region.
According to the report, he said that he was also in favour of easy travelling between both countries especially for trade and religious rituals.
He highlighted the problems faced by the Hindu community, particularly the issue of forced conversion of religion.
He said that the education ratio is very low in the Hindu community and women too were not very socially active, adding that kidnapping and forced marriages is also a serious issue for his community.
He will take oath in the next session before presentation of the provincial Budget for the fiscal year 2013-14, the report added. (ANI)
